Bismillah.
I was searching for a video on how to train my mind to think critically after attending an intellectual conference the same day where I noticed my lack ability to generate a critical thinking at fast rate than others. In simple, my mind works at really slow pace in interpreting the information.
But I found another video which has strong points to note.
It was about how to improve the way you thinking and living by training your subconscious mind, the mind that is powerful but vulnerable.
1. Sub-mind always records the talking and hearing.
2. Sub-mind records all life memories and experiences as mental movies and images in mind
3. It doesn't hear "no" or "not". In my case, whenever I said I am not going to talk to this person, I will end up initiating the conversation with that person.
4. It can't comprehend the future, only know now.
5. It controls 95% of life which is habits and we are the creator of habits. 95% you said and thought today are said and thought yesterday. On the other hand, conscious mind is only in control of 5% of life.
Therefore, since the conscious mind only controls 5% of our thinking, action and words, it is impossible to change one's habits overnight that even if someone did, it will not last that long before he/she goes back to his/her normal habits. For instance, all the smokers were once a non-smoker, to stop smoking it will take days months years for them instead of reverting back to their original state, they are creating a new habit that allows them to stop smoking.
Second thinking, 5% over 95%. If you used that 5% to change 1% of habits for a couple of days that is a good step already. You can't never change the whole 95% of your habits at once, considering the limiting power is only at 5%. We need to do it by stages. I believe this is the meaning behind this verse in Qur'an:
“Therefore, stand firm (on the straight path) as you are commanded and those who turn in repentance with you. And do not transgress, for He (Allah) sees well all that you do.”
[Surah Hud (11): ayat 112]
In Islam itself there is a highlight on istiqamah. What it is? Istiqamah is "to go straight into the right direction, acting rightly, allowing no deviation."
Two main points that I can conclude from its definition;
a. The act of going straight with no deviation can only happen when one has completely mastered it into the ultimate habits that can't change even a bit.
b. The straight path which is right. Allah wants us to get into a positive habit for our own benefits. There is no way the negative act can give us any benefits in any way.
And Allah the Almighty validate the fact that habits take time to be created by forgiving those who deviate from the right path, after they seek His forgiveness, and He acknowledge all the effort we had made: those who turn in repentance with you. And do not transgress, for He (Allah) sees well all that you do.
6. Sub-mind can't tell different between imagination and real life; eg goosebumps happened since your sub thought the fear was real.
7. Repetition creates new beliefs in the sub-mind therefore anything you said repeatedly and think long enough will eventually make you to believe it is true thought it is false. (Hajar kaya hajar kaya hajar kaya jk)
Well, this answers my question on how to train my mind to think critically (not completely but a good step to begin with) is making it as an habit.
